Are you getting enough fiber?

The average American person gets 15 grams of fiber per day, whereas the recommended level is about 25 to 35 grams per day.
Over and over when I explain the Paleo Diet to people, they ask, “But don’t you need to eat whole grains for the fiber?” What these people aren’t aware of is that grains have nowhere near the fiber that fruits and vegetables have.

Below lists the average total fiber content in a 1,000 calorie serving of several foods:
Refined cereals – 6 grams
Whole grain cereals – 24 grams
Fruits – 41 grams
Nonstarchy vegetables – 185 grams

As you can see, fruits and especially vegetables pack a serious punch (of fiber that is)! And we all know how important fiber is for our digestion. It also has positive effects on blood chemistry and can help prevent varicose veins, hemorrhoids, hiatal hernia, and illnesses associated with the gastrointestinal tract.
